Dave Mann Makes AMSOIL History

"It Comes Down to Hard Work"

Direct Jobber Dave Mann has again made AMSOIL history by becoming the first to earn 7-Star Regency Platinum status, sitting atop the group of the highest-achieving AMSOIL Dealers that includes 6-Star Regency Platinum Direct Jobbers Bill and Donna Durand, 6-Star Regency Platinum Direct Jobbers Ray and Arlene Schmit and new 5-Star Regency Platinum Direct Jobbers David and Carol Bell. Mann first became a history-maker in 2007 when he was the first to earn six stars.

Mann became an AMSOIL Dealer in November 1999. "I've been a gearhead since I was very young," Mann said. "I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical and automotive engineering, worked my entire career at Ford Motor Company as an engineer specializing in powertrain and chassis vehicle systems and components engineering and testing for cars, trucks and selected special vehicle operations programs."

He used AMSOIL products for many years before becoming a Dealer.

While continuing his career at Ford, where he worked 10 hours a day, Mann built his AMSOIL business at night, working until the early morning hours. "There were lots of times my commission checks were only $100 or $200, sometimes a lot less," Mann said. "It all comes down to hard work."

Mann acknowledges there are many methods to grow a thriving AMSOIL business and talked about some of the things that work for him in a recent interview.

Mostly Online Business

Mann built his business online, using technology to build a reputation with his expertise in lubricants and all kinds of engines. "I focus primarily on the Internet business model as I believe it is an effective method to connect with other performance-minded automotive and powersports enthusiasts from around the country," Mann said. "Dealers who have the right product and technical knowledge, and know how to effectively use the Internet, will have a steady stream of potential customers making contact with them."

Customer Focus

"I build a customer relationship in the most straightforward manner possible," Mann said. From initial contact through all future support, Mann lets his customers know he is available to help them in all areas. "I respond to anything from product and vehicle questions to business and support to Preferred Customers, accounts and catalog customers to fielding potential Dealership questions," Mann said. "If for some reason I need to do more work regarding their question, I always get back with them as quickly as I can."

Retaining Customers

Mann said one of the best ways to get and keep customers is to have in-depth product and technical knowledge of both vehicles and lubricants and filtration.

"Customers have detailed questions and they want a source they can go to and know they will receive accurate information presented in a manner they can fully understand and take action on," Mann said. "My customers have come to know over the years that the info they receive from me is accurate and they can always depend on me. Plus, a good Preferred Customer has a high potential to become a successful AMSOIL Dealer."

Trust develops between a Dealer and his or her customers when Dealers focus on their customers' needs, Mann said. "If I do these things, then ultimately the customer is fully satisfied that with me as a sponsor they have a 'one stop' source of knowledge and do not have to continue to search for information or answers to their questions elsewhere."

The entire process from initial contact to sale to providing information and follow-up is equally important, Mann said. "It's knowing what your prospects and customers want and providing it to them," he said. "It's being accessible, available, knowledgeable and reliable."

AMSOIL Gives Life to a Sweet Old Cadillac

Making a skeptic into a believer.

I thought you might appreciate hearing my AMSOIL story.

When the opportunity arose last year to purchase my mother-in-law's 1987 Cadillac DeVille, I jumped at the chance. A true low mileage survivor, it was in near pristine condition. I was proudly showing it off to a mechanic friend when he said, "Uh-oh, you bought an HT-4100? Good luck buddy."

After much research I understood what he meant. The HT-4100 was rumored to be one of the most troublesome engines Cadillac ever built. The problems are numerous: an aluminum block with cast iron heads that expand and contract at different rates causing premature head and intake gasket failure, coolant loss into the oil, and finally main and rod bearing failure. They also have a heavily loaded distributor gear, weak timing gears, and sludging issues.

My first thought was, if ever an engine needed AMSOIL, it's this one. I first heard about AMSOIL at the old Brohman Dragway in the late 1970s from a fellow racer who swore by it. For the past 10 years, I've used various synthetic oils with favorable results, but never AMSOIL. Then I talked with Dave Mann, the AMSOIL Dealer in my home town, and told him my story. Having spent 19 years as a lubrication specialist with Ford, Dave knows his stuff. He made several recommendations, and shared with me his excellent e-book on motor oils.

I also asked around at the Cadillac owners group I belong to, and almost every one of them said, "Don't buy AMSOIL! It's too expensive and won't do you any good. You need this or that oil with this or that additive," and so on.

So who was I to believe?

Having spent over 25 years in advertising and marketing, I have a strong skepticism for extravagant claims made by manufacturers. Usually, when you hear impressive adjectives like "advanced" and "superior," someone just wants your money or your vote (or both). So I read the science; from AMSOIL and from several independent studies. I came to the conclusion that it really is an excellent product. It also intrigued me that one of the primary sales points made by AMSOIL is to convince you to buy LESS of their product. That kind of marketing is contrary to anything I've experienced, and elevates AMSOIL's credibility level exponentially.

I switched the Cadillac over to AMSOIL 5W-30 (ASL) last fall, then put in AMSOIL 10W-30 (ATM) this spring (even though it's not a turbo, I like the extra wear protection offered by this formula). Rather than letting the oil go a full year, I change it every six months, during which time it accumulates about 6,000 miles. My dad was an auto mechanic and taught the 3,000-mile oil change rule like it was the 11th commandment - that kind of conditioning is hard to overcome. With this frequency, I still spend less money than if I changed the oil on a three-month/3,000-mile schedule. I use the money I save to have drain samples tested by an independent lab each time.

The Deville now has 50,000 miles and runs like a fine Swiss watch. I have not had a single problem with the 'troublesome' HT-4100 engine. It runs roughly 10 degrees cooler than with regular oil, and my gas mileage has increased by 10%. It has become my mission to get 200,000 miles from this car. With AMSOIL, I might just make it.

As an addendum, I also recently switched my wife's 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan to AMSOIL. Since we've owned it, this car has had a lifter clatter for the first 10 seconds on cold starts. Literally, on the first start after putting in AMSOIL, the clatter was gone.

Thanks AMSOIL. By making a superb product that truly does what you say it will do, you've given new life to a sweet old Cadillac, and made a believer out of this devout skeptic.

"AMSOIL INC. warrants that the use of its lubricants will not cause mechanical damage to any mechanically sound equipment when AMSOIL INC. products are used in full compliance with the company's recommendations and instructions."

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are formulated to surpass engine test specifications, offering protection far greater than competing motor oils for extended drain intervals. Most synthetic oil manufacturers make no claim to extended drain intervals, deferring to the maintenance schedule provided by the vehicle manufacturer. With its unparalleled oil and warranty program, AMSOIL offers consumers unprecedented protection and economics.

Another AMSOIL First

More than 20 years ago, AMSOIL began using the NOACK volatility test as a comparison tool and measurement of quality. Back then, nearly every oil tested side-by-side with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils failed, and those that passed barely squeaked by. Other oil companies paid no attention to NOACK results until Ford Motor Company made it a requirement for service fill oils, validating what AMSOIL had said all along.

THE NOACK Volatility Test
The NOACK Volatility Test determines the evaporation loss of lubricants in high temperature service. The more motor oils vaporize, the thicker and heavier they become, contributing to poor circulation, reduced fuel economy and increased oil consumption, wear and emissions. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil resists high temperature volatization better than other motor oils. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil maintains peak fuel efficiency and reduces oil consumption and emissions.

AMSOIL Now An ISO Certified Manufacturer
AMSOIL recently received ISO 9001:2000 certification of our Quality Management System (QMS). NSF International Strategic Registrations is the registrar that has verified our QMS meets the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, the most widely utilized quality standard throughout the world for quality management systems. ISO standards are used by over 300,000 companies worldwide setting rigorous standards for businesses, government and industry.

ISO 9001:2000 is applicable to any manufacturing and service organization providing a framework for system development that focuses on the customer, quality system performance and ongoing improvement. AMSOIL received ISO 9001:2000 registration under the scope: synthetic lubricants blending, packaging, and other fulfillment directly associated with lubricant product.

The ISO certification puts AMSOIL in line with some of the most efficient companies in the world. It is further assurance that the products and services AMSOIL provides will continue to maintain the high level of quality the company always demanded.
